One of Ghana’s most celebrated sports journalists, the legendary Kofi Asare Brako, popularly known as “Abatey, Wonuanie-Kagyaa,” has made a major return to radio and television as he rejoins Atinka 104.7 FM and Atinka TV in Accra as the Head of the Sports Department.
Abatey needs little introduction in Ghana’s radio landscape. He built a formidable reputation during his illustrious stint at Peace 104.3 FM, the country’s most popular Twi radio station, where he worked for eight years (1999–2008).
In 2008, he moved to rival station Adom 106.3 FM, where he stayed until 2015—a decision he later openly admitted he regretted.
In January 2015, when Atinka FM was established by Dr. Samuel Tobin, CEO of Tobinko Company Limited, Abatey joined the media group on a lucrative deal as Head of Sports. He worked alongside notable sports journalists such as Sadick Adams (Sports Obama), now Morning Show Host on Angel TV, and Seth Dadzie (Gomoa Jaman Dehye3), currently with Asempa FM.
The Atinka Sports Show, which aired on both Atinka FM and Atinka TV, quickly became one of the most watched and talked-about sports programs in the country, earning massive audience loyalty and industry respect.
On November 8, 2016, Abatey was promoted to Acting General Manager of Atinka FM and TV, a position he held for three years.
In September 2019, he was appointed Public Relations Officer / Personal Assistant to the Minister of Sports, marking another significant milestone in his career.
However, while serving in that role, Abatey suffered a stroke on November 16, 2022, which kept him out of the public eye and bedridden until mid-2025. After a long and courageous recovery journey, the veteran broadcaster is now fully back and ready to do what he loves best.
Abatey is set to officially resume broadcasting duties on Tuesday, February 10, on Atinka 104.7 FM and Atinka TV. He has promised listeners and viewers a transformed sports show, with a renewed commitment to excellence, credibility, and dominance—aimed at making Atinka one of the best sports stations in Ghana once again.
The legend is back. The mic is on. Ghana sports radio is about to feel the impact.
