The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has just inaugurated a 17-member ministerial committee to revive Kumawood, the once-thriving local film industry ¹. This initiative is a direct response to Kumawood’s struggles with declining production, distribution challenges, and limited financial support, which have been affecting actors, producers, and other stakeholders.
The committee is packed with key industry figures, including veteran actress Oheneyere Mercy Asiedu and actor Bill Asamoah, and will be chaired by Bishop Ofori-Adu.
At the swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, March 4, Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the importance of collaboration, saying, “We as leaders of the country, all we need from you is to unite and work together… So unity is very key to us as far as the issue is concerned” .
The committee’s main task is to develop a strategic framework to breathe new life into Kumawood and create sustainable employment opportunities for those in the industry. This is a crucial move, as Kumawood has played a significant role in Ghanaian entertainment, culture, and storytelling .
