Renowned Kumawood movie producer & director , Frank Fiifi Gharbin, is calling on Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, to take concrete actions to revive the Kumawood film industry. Kumawood, which refers to movies produced in Kumasi using the local Twi language, was once a beloved part of Ghanaian culture, employing thousands of people, including actors, producers, makeup artists, and costume designers.
However, the industry has struggled to withstand the test of time and is on the verge of collapse. In response, Dr. Amoakohene recently met with movie producers, actors, and actresses in Kumasi to discuss ways to revive Kumawood. While this meeting was a step in the right direction, Gharbin believes that more needs to be done.
Gharbin is urging Dr. Amoakohene to establish an independent committee, comprised of stakeholders from the industry, to investigate the challenges facing Kumawood and provide recommendations for its revival. This committee would be tasked with identifying the root causes of the industry’s decline and developing a comprehensive plan to restore Kumawood to its former glory.
Gharbin’s call to action is motivated by his concern that previous meetings with the industry stakeholders have not yielded any tangible results. He believes that a more structured and collaborative approach is needed to address the complex challenges facing Kumawood.
The revival of Kumawood is not only important for the entertainment industry but also for the local economy. A thriving Kumawood industry would create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and promote Ghanaian culture.
As Dr. Amoakohene has already demonstrated his commitment to the region’s development, Gharbin is hopeful that the minister will take his proposal seriously and establish the committee needed to revive Kumawood.
