In a bold effort to restore the once-vibrant Kumawood film industry, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has initiated a series of strategic engagements with key stakeholders in the local movie industry.
On June 1, 2025, Dr. Amoakohene convened a crucial meeting at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) Conference Room, bringing together actors, producers, directors, and other industry players. The focus of the meeting was the formation of a dedicated board that will spearhead the revival and sustainable development of Kumawood.
The Minister, who made a public commitment to rejuvenate the struggling industry upon assuming office, reiterated his vision during the stakeholder session. He emphasized that Kumawood remains a cultural treasure and an economic asset that deserves deliberate investment and strategic coordination.
Following the initial meeting, a core group of stakeholders reconvened at the same venue on June 1, 2025, to further deliberate on the structure, responsibilities, and composition of the proposed board. The board will be tasked with overseeing the planning and execution of initiatives aimed at reviving and modernizing the Kumasi-based movie industry.
According to the roadmap shared by the Regional Minister’s office, the election of board members is scheduled for June 22, 2025.
The new board is expected to bring fresh ideas, professional leadership, and industry-driven reforms that will reposition Kumawood as a major player in Ghana’s creative arts sector.
Stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the long-overdue revival of Kumawood is finally receiving the political and institutional support it needs.
