In a passionate discussion on Nhyira FM’s Entertainment Power Show on March 8, 2025, renowned entertainment host and critic, DJ Ogidi Brown, made a bold claim that only one man holds the key to reviving Kumawood—Reverend Samuel Akwasi Nyamekye, popularly known as Miracle Films. His declaration has since sparked heated conversations among industry stakeholders and fans of the once-thriving Kumasi movie industry.
Ogidi Brown’s statement came in response to recent efforts by Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who has pledged to rejuvenate Kumawood. While acknowledging the minister’s commitment, Ogidi Brown insisted that the real solution lies in the hands of Samuel Nyamekye, the visionary filmmaker credited with shaping Kumawood into a dominant force in Ghana’s entertainment scene. He argued that no one understands the industry better than Nyamekye, who discovered and nurtured some of Ghana’s biggest stars, including Nana Ama McBrown, Agya Koo, Akrobeto, and many others. According to him, if Kumawood thrived under Nyamekye’s leadership, then he is the only person who can bring it back to life.
The discussion also touched on the deep divisions within the industry, with Ogidi Brown calling for unity among actors, producers, and stakeholders. He lamented that personal interests and political affiliations have fractured the industry, making its revival even more difficult. He urged filmmakers to set aside their differences and rally behind Samuel Nyamekye to restore Kumawood’s lost glory. In his words, “The Kumasi movie industry was built by Mr. Nyamekye, and if it’s struggling today, he is the only one who can fix it. But first, the people involved must unite for a common goal.”
Kumawood, once a dominant force in West African cinema, has seen a significant decline due to financial struggles, poor distribution, and the rise of foreign content. Despite multiple attempts to revive it, the industry continues to face challenges. Dr. Amoakohene recently met with stakeholders and donated GHC 20,000 to support their efforts, a move that has been met with mixed reactions. While some appreciate his support, others believe the gesture is too small to make a real impact.
As debates rage on, one question remains, will Samuel Nyamekye take up the challenge, and if he does, will the industry be willing to rally behind him? Many believe that without his leadership, Kumawood’s chances of regaining its past glory remain slim.
