Renowned filmmaker and Chief Executive Officer of Miracle Films, Rev. Samuel Akwasi Nyamekye, has vehemently dismissed claims that the Kumawood film industry is dead. Speaking on Angel 96.1 FM’s entertainment show, monitored by seancity.com, Mr. Nyamekye set the record straight, emphasizing that the industry has merely evolved with the digital age.
Contrary to popular opinion, Nyamekye asserted that Kumawood is still thriving, albeit in a different format. The industry, which has spawned iconic stars like Agya Koo, Mr. Beautiful, Kwaku Manu, Lilwin, Kyeiwaa, and Asabeaa, among others, has shifted its focus from analogue to digital platforms.
Nyamekye attributed the misconception about Kumawood’s demise to the industry’s transition from physical disc sales to digital distribution. He revealed that producers are now leveraging YouTube to showcase their content, generating substantial revenue in the process.
As a testament to the industry’s vibrancy, Nyamekye disclosed that he has produced seven movies this year alone, all of which are available on his YouTube channel. He cited the example of Vivian Jill Lawrence, who has successfully reinvented herself as “Abrewa Mafia” through YouTube, a role that may not have been possible through traditional casting channels.
Nyamekye also praised Dr. Likee, another beneficiary of YouTube’s platform, which has enabled him to discover and showcase his talents. The film mogul urged the public to explore Kumawood’s content on YouTube, promising that they will find high-quality, engaging movies produced daily.
